In the classroom
My work as a professor I highlight the use of traditional artistic practice, like weaving and craft-making, with technology and media installation. I encourage students to learn about the history and politics of materials, and to think about the multiple meanings of the materials they use for their artistic work. The politics of my work is part of my methodology for teaching. I ask students to trace how materials and resources, especially those they use in their artistic practices, become commodified through regimes of capitalist production. Students learn to historicize and place into historical and colonial context their own artist production. My teaching methodology is rooted through a global south epistemology. |
